5 Reasons To Upgrade From Drugstore Shaving Cream

by Matthew Taylor Ruggieri on May 28, 2011.

In our Shaving 101 article, we gave you the step-by-step for a quality shave. But then we realized that selecting a good shaving cream is actually the first step. A quality shaving cream can make the difference between a comfortable close shave and one you do not look forward to. If you’ve been using the drugstore stuff, it’s time to give something new a try. Good shave creams – and proper use – will help prevent the nicks, cuts, razor burn and dryness associated with shaving. Here are some reasons to opt for the good stuff and leave the drug store bought can of foam behind for good.

1 Drug store brands are often loaded with cheap, synthetic chemicals producing foam (essentially, air), thus providing the lowest quality barrier from the blade. A premium shave cream provides a much thicker protective barrier and cushion to minimize razor burn and discomfort.
2 While foam is thick, it isn’t dense. A thin velvety layer allows you to see where you’ve shaved and a premium shave cream should allow you to repeat over missed areas.
3 A good premium shave cream will contain better & higher percentage of natural ingredients. These quality ingredients in these shave creams helps to prep the skin, soften and lift the facial hair for a smoother and closer shave.
4 Essential oils are expensive, but have proven benefits. Premium shave creams are chocked full of these essential oils and vitamins to help soothe and heal the skin during / after shaving.
5 A premium shave cream should leave your skin hydrated and nourished, not stripped of natural oils. If your skin is stripped of oils, it over produces and this can produce breakouts and irritation.
