Men Of Distinction

Men of Distinction: Matthew Henson, Market Editor at Complex

by Matthew Taylor Ruggieri on November 17, 2011.

The Men of Distinction series is an on-going conversation with men who create, explore, advocate and inspire. In this week’s edition, we sit down with Matthew Henson, Market Editor at Complex, the premier online destination for the most influential 20-something male consumers.

What do you love about what you do?

I am the Market Editor at Complex Magazine and Complex.com, and what I love the most about my job is that I get to put the best product out, from the best designers, and arrange it in a way that makes it appealing and relatable. More often then not, guys approach style in the opposite manner in which they should. You see a trend, you go buy it, but it might not be the right thing for you. That’s why what I try to do is present the best items in the market and let people choose what’s right for them. That’s ultimately what having great style is about. I have a really great relationship with fashion. I love to learn the intricacies of garment construction, and I really enjoy clothes, admittedly to an extreme.

What inspires you about the city you live in?
I am constantly inspired by New York (being that I am not a native). I love the grit, the bite, the attitude, but also New York is very nurturing in that artists, designers, truly creative people are the ones that make up the city and end up successful. It’s full of culture and diversity. It’s a city for dreamers, but for the hard working, a place for your dreams to come true. I love seeing the city, whether I’m on the subway or in a car, it’s equally gratifying.

Album of the year (so far)?
Album of the year is equally shared between Jay-Z and Kanye’s ‘Watch The Throne’, Little Dragon’s ‘Ritual Union’, and of course the Weekend’s ‘House of Balloons.’ Although I must temper that and say I am really into 70’s music and house music for the most part.

Favorite film or book of all time?
My favorite film is, and I am both abashed and proud to say this, Freeway, starring Reese Witherspoon. It was her first movie, and it had comedy, suspense, a bit of a twisted story. I watch a lot of documentaries because I like to hear people’s personal stories.
My favorite book is “The Carrucan’s of Kurrajong” by Jasmine Yuen. (That’s a bit of humor for the readers).

What makes someone a man of distinction to you?

A man of distinction is someone who knows who they are and has mapped out a path of their own. It may not be the road you thought you would take, but the fact that you have never veered off the path shows your strength as a man. You have your own style, you have a strong opinion, and you are unique.
Some men that you believe are Men of Distinction?
It may sound cliche but I would say Martin Luther King Jr and Cary Grant.

What’s the most essential piece of your grooming routine that you wouldn’t go without?
I am a very simple and effortless guy. I use Crew Hair Pomade for my hair and Kiehl’s Faciel Fuel Transformer for my skin. It’s important to wash your face with a cleanser. I learned that recently the hard way.
