Morning Routine: Gabe Alonso, Senior Editor @ Gilt Man

by Matthew Taylor Ruggieri on March 28, 2013.

We’re taking cues from Gabe Alonso, Senior Editor at Gilt Man, in our first installment of Morning Routine. Gabe lives in New York and is an accomplished writer and men’s style enthusiast.

What do you do when you first wake up?

I hit snooze just enough times to avoid going for a run (usually, I swear I’m not that lazy). Post shower, I throw on the necessary good-smelling accoutrements and maybe a quick shaving touch-up. The beauty of having a beard this time of year is that shaving is more of an afterthought than top of mind.

What’s your go-to outfit?

How I dress depends wholly on the weather and how lazy I feel that day. Assuming all things equal, I’ll likely grab a pair of trousers or 3sixteen denim, a GANT Rugger button down and either a Rugger sweater or LBM sport coat. If I haven’t worn it in a while, I’ll throw on my favorite vintage camel- colored Harris Tweed sport coat that I grabbed from Wooden Sleepers. It’s definitely my go-to.

Any finishing touches before you head out the door?

I work some of American Crew’s forming cream into my hair. It helps thicken it up and slick it back without seeming like I have a gallon of product in my hair. I always forgo a comb and just use my fingers. The final step is adding some Dude No. 1 beard oil to soften up the whiskers and tame the fur I have on my face. It helps to keep any unruly hairs in their place.

What wouldn’t you leave the house without?

iPhone. MacBook Pro. Wallet. Keys. Warby Parker Glasses. Everything else can be bought at the local Duane Reade if I forget it.

How does your day at work begin?

I sit down at my desk at Gilt. Once I’ve poured myself a cup (or two) of coffee, I begin going through my Twitter feed, Google reader, etc. to catch up on the news and conversations my friends had the night before.

EXPERT OPINION:

Gabe uses two products in the morning – a beard oil to keep his facial hair fresh and a styling cream to keep unruly hair tame. Here are two products that we recommend:

Fresh, spicy, and woody, this fragrance is the new classic manly scent that will make you want to get close. With Virginia cedarwood, green coriander and pink peppercorn. This formula is 100% natural and uses only essential oils, organic hemp seed oil and American jojoba oil.
