March and its madness make the single best month of sports. There will be more buzzer beaters in the next two weeks than there will be for the rest of the year. Get your brackets out Motley goers, it’s time.
But briefly, as Stephen Colbert once said, the NCAA tournament breeds uninformed gambling like no other sporting event. So for all you sports betters out there, and God knows I was one of them, lets take a breather from the wagering this year and appreciate the greatest tournament on Earth for for what it is — sports and competition at its highest level of intensity. Now for the picks.
I’m going with Jared Sullinger and Ohio State to win the national championship over Jamie Dixon’s solid Pittsburgh Panther squad. The Buckeyes are likely to send three players to the NBA next season and all three of them could make a Freshmen impact. And while Ohio does lack depth, they have all the ingredients of a complete basketball team. Buford is an elite point guard, Diebler a deadly three point shooter, Craft a lockdown defensive player, Lighty can slash his way to the rim, and they have an exemplary big man in Sullinger.
Also, I’m putting St. John’s in the elite eight, Utah State in the sweet sixteen, and I got Wofford over BYU in a first round upset. After all, the dark horses and cinderella stories are what make the madness.
And don’t forget to let us know if you’ve spotted this year’s George Mason.
