Scrub Therapy: Reduced Breakouts and A Closer Shave

by Matthew Taylor Ruggieri on October 12, 2011.

One of the main causes of breakouts is from dead skin cell build up. Like a snake sheds its skin, so should you. Exfoliation (using a scrub) is often forgotten or over-looked because it isn’t something that you should do everyday. However, using two-three times a week is key.

Exfoliating can reduce ingrown hairs and breakouts by removing dead cells and oil that can clog hair follicles and pores. You’ll also find that the performance of lotions and serums will improve because the active components of the products are applied to newer skin cells.

Scrubs are made of particles like pumice, crushed nuts, salt or sugar that are incorporated into a gel or cream cleanser. There are also chemical exfoliates like Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) and Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) which strip away dead skin cells. If you use a product with a chemical exfoliate, you won’t feel any scrubbing action even though it’s working.

How to Use a Scrub:

1. Massage in a circular motion.
Whichever type of exfoliating product you choose, massage gently into skin in a circular motion. Be gentle. No aggressive scrubbing necessary to do the job. Apply a moisturizer immediately after exfoliating for optimal results.

2. Exfoliate 2-3 times weekly before washing your face.
Sloughing off dead, dull skin before cleansing will unclog pores for reduced breakouts and smoother skin. As you age, your skin sheds slower than when you were younger, so exfoliating helps speed up this process. Having a fresher layer of skin gives you a brighter complexion and a healthier, younger appearance.

3. Exfoliate before shaving, cleanse after shaving.
Using a scrub before shaving helps lift hairs off of the skin and allow hairs stuck under the skin to be released. This will give you a closer shave with less risk of ingrown hairs. Wash your face after shaving to get rid of all the grim and hair sitting on top of your skin and this is when the cleanser will be able to best penetrate your pores.
